ARTICLE: National Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is an official celebration that recognizes the history, cultural impact, achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans who have inspired others to achieve success. President Lyndon B. Johnson started it as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and President Regan expanded it to a 30 day period until it was enacted into law on August 17th, 1988.

Since then, Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide from September 15th until October 15th through art, festivals, conferences and more. The celebration is significant because it coincides with the independence of some Latin American countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras and Chile.

Aside from being the second-fastest growing ethnic group in the country, the Latino population is a growing force in terms of small business growth, which is one of the biggest economic engines of the US economy. Latinos are almost two times more likely to start their own business than any other group, which has led to 34% growth over the last decade.
