Your Auto Policy Could Be Voided

Your auto insurance policy could be worthless, and you might not know it until you need it.

That’s not a scare tactic. It’s what just happened to a real person in a case decided by the Michigan Supreme Court last week.

A woman was injured in a hit-and-run. She filed a claim. Her insurer investigated and discovered that her garaging address was wrong and her son wasn’t listed as a household member.

Result: Policy voided. Claim denied. No benefits. Premiums refunded.

The court upheld it unanimously.

This can happen anywhere, not just Michigan. Insurers have the right to rescind a policy when application information is materially inaccurate. And courts are backing them up.

Four things that put your coverage at risk right now:

1. Your vehicle is garaged somewhere other than your listed address
2. Someone in your household drives your car but isn’t on the policy
3. You moved — even temporarily — and didn’t update your policy
4. A vehicle is used for Uber, DoorDash, or any business purpose
